Oh, this hit! I think we obsess over youth because it signals a social acceptance and value. Society has moved age and maturity to the fringes (And it's sick in a way), where youth is the most desirable. But you said something that stuck with me. If we are the oldest we have ever been, we are also the newest versions of ourselves TODAY that we'll ever be. Yes, HumanOS! THAT is to be celebrated. I am the most up-to-date, most wise, most healed, stable, and secure version. I'll take that.
Yes, Chasity!!! You! Get! It!! 👏 All we have is now, and that is something worth celebrating. Everything that led up to this very moment. HumanOS- I love that. Thank you for your reflection, I’m glad we can connect!
This resonated with me so much, aging is something that’s been on my mind a lot recently and this is helping me make sense of all the complex/contradictory feelings that come with that. And I feel less alone, so thank you for that! 🩷
I’m so glad it resonated! I’ve been thinking about it so much. Everyone around me seems to be turning to Botox or other injectables and extremes and while I’ve dabbled in it a bit myself, it’s one of those things that will be constantly chased. It’s the mindset that needs to change, imo. Harder said than done but we can try, collectively!
So this piece has made an impression on me that will stay with me forever. Three main things;
“So yes, 33 is old for a 33-year-old because it’s the oldest I have ever known.” - this is not spoken about enough, we need to be more accepting of others perspectives 👏🏼
“I’m not a girl, not yet a woman”, à la Britney Spears.” - this is one of my all time favourite films and will never fail to make me sob because it’s depicts exactly how I feel and has done since I was a teen.
Which actually leads me onto my third note, that our youth is always with us, it’s part of us.
This is a masterpiece in my opinion. Grateful that you shared. 👏🏼
Ok I will never not think about how my 31 year old self is actually the “youngest” version of me because it is the newest! Ah!!
You wrote masterfully about age. I often lean more into the camp of youth as possibility- I remember just being in such awe of the world. And now I’m more cynical? Or I like to say simply a realist. But really, that youthful zeal and curiosity is something I’m constantly wanting to stay close to. Is this why people have kids?
I’m left with so many questions- the sign of a fantastic piece.
This made me smile!!! I’m so glad you connect youth with possibility, this is a beautiful mindset! Youth is eternal if you choose it to be, truly. Something that helps me a lot with reconnecting to that feeling is through creativity and play.
It’s funny what you say about having kids.. my step mom always says that having kids was like her own second childhood, and I love that so much.
I turned 33 this year and this piece hit everything I’ve been feeling and experiencing. Thanks for putting it out into the world ✨
Something in early 30s shifts… I’m glad it resonated with you!!
